ABSTRACT
With the constant evolution of technology and the vast increase in internet usage, the notions of data privacy and data protection are hotly discussed. This is because service providers who operate websites, apps, and social media platforms frequently collect and keep user personal data with the goal of offering suitable services to best suit each user’s choice. Typically, these digital service providers are tasked for securing users’ personal data from unauthorized access and against all risks. However, there are instances where these platforms fail to adequately safeguard the data collected, resulting in a data breach and the exposure of users’ sensitive data to unauthorised parties who can use the personal data to defraud and harass the users or to send unwanted advertisements without the users’ consent. As a result, the users’ fundamental right to privacy and freedom to express themselves is violated. As a result, organizations must implement defensive mechanisms to ensure proper security of users’ personal data, as well as raise user knowledge of their right to control over the personal data they provide and with whom it is shared.
